    Trauma/PTSD Treatment in Florida

Are you having stressful intrusive thoughts or nightmares about something that happened to you or your witnessed? Is it feeling like you’re reliving the “nightmare” over and over?

Do these memories, flashbacks, or other reminders of what happened have you feeling nervous, on-edge, fearful, sad, numb, or isolated, and unable to do what you want and need to do?

If so, you may be experiencing post-traumatic stress.

Most of us will experience at least one traumatic event in our lifetimes. It may be from an accident, abusive situation, or assault. Or it may be from war, disaster, or the unexpected death of a loved one.

And while many of us recover from trauma over time with caring support, many others suffer longer-lasting effects. It’s not uncommon to feel intense emotional pain, fear, and confusion long after the trauma.

So, if you think you may have post-traumatic stress, even if it’s been a long time, you’re not alone! There’s help here…

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Florida

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapeutic approach that stemmed from traditional Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. However, it’s different from these and most other Western approaches to treatment.

Rather than focus on challenge to change negative thoughts, feelings, and situations, ACT emphasizes acceptance, mindfulness, and values to foster change and wellness. Developer of ACT, psychologist Steven C. Hayes, stated the following in a Psychology Today post that describes the basis ACT:

We as a culture seem to be dedicated to the idea that ‘negative’ human emotions need to be fixed, managed, or changed-not experienced as part of a whole life. We are treating our own lives as problems to be solved as if we can sort through our experiences for the ones we like and throw out the rest. Acceptance, mindfulness, and values are key psychological tools needed for that transformative shift.

Does this path to change resonate for you? If so…

    Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Florida

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a short-term, problem-oriented, and present-focused therapy, helps you to understand the connections between your thoughts, feelings, and actions.

CBT is based on the belief that your perception of events, not the actual events, effects how you feel and act or react in response to the events. Your perceptions are influenced by your core beliefs, which developed in childhood. They’re also influenced by your unhelpful assumptions, your human tendency to focus on the negative and disregard positive or neutral information, and automatic negative thoughts which have become habit.

According to CBT, mental health problems form and and continue through irrational, inaccurate thoughts and unhelpful learned behaviors. So, mental health problems may be reduced or eliminated by changing those faulty thoughts and counter-productive actions.

If you think CBT may be a good fit for you…

    Mindfulness-Based Therapy in Florida

Mindfulness-Based Therapy (MBT), also known as Mindfulness Therapy, is used to treat unhelpful thinking patterns and actions that cause or worsen problems. This is done by teaching you to be more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and environment. With greater awareness of yourself and the world around you, you learn how to avoid unhealthy, potentially harmful automatic reactions or habits.

MBT is unlike many traditional therapies that take a challenging approach to unhelpful thoughts, feelings, and situations. It’s a major part of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT; see above), is often used with other therapies, and is also used as a stand-alone approach.

There are different types of MBT, including Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Therapy (MBSR). MBCT, often used to treat anxiety and depression, focuses on identifying intrusive problematic thinking, MBSR, which is used more often to reduce general stress, incorporates stress-coping strategies with mindfulness practices.

Is this approach of interest to you? If so…

    Solution-Focused Brief Therapy in Florida

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), or Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), is a client-centered, short-term, goal-oriented, strengths-based, and culturally informed therapy. From the very first session, this approach fosters hope, promotes change, and offers relief, immediately empowering you forward.

SFBT begins with clearly identifying your goal(s) for therapy, creating a detailed vision of what you want and when the problem(s) that brought you to therapy are gone or no longer an issue. Then, we move forward on the path toward achieving your goal(s).

SFBT highlights your unique experiences, values, and feelings, builds on your existing abilities and resources, and focuses on your goals throughout our work together. It’s based on the belief that you are the expert in your own live, that you already possess the necessary tools to help you solve your problems.

If SFBT sounds right for you…
